A medical manifold is the source point that connects cylinder banks to the facility's medical gas pipeline. It maintains continuity of supply by changing over between the duty bank and the reserve bank without interrupting delivery.

What is it?
A manifold typically comprises two cylinder banks (duty and reserve), high-pressure flexible tailpipes, non-return valves, an automatic or manual changeover unit, and pressure regulators that reduce cylinder pressure to pipeline pressure — together with relief protection and status indication or an alarm signal when the bank state changes. Manifold type and capacity are selected according to the gas, the design load and the approved project specification.

What is the difference between an automatic and a manual manifold?
An automatic manifold transfers supply from the duty bank to the reserve bank without human intervention when the duty bank is depleted, whereas a manual manifold requires an operator to switch over. Selection depends on how critical the application is and on the approved project specification.

The number of cylinders per bank is derived from the design gas load, the simultaneous flow rates and the required autonomy before replenishment — according to the applicable standard, the project specification and the approved design.
Is the manifold connected to the alarm system?
